Georg Friedrich Schmidt: Portrait of Rembrandt, 1771
After the 1669 self-portrait by Rembrandt in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence, inv.no.1871 .
Schmidt, a son of a poor draper, initially attended drawing classes with the aspiration to become a painter. Due to financial problems, he turned to engraving. With time he acquired a reputation that helped him to be accepted to the Academy in Paris. In 1744 he leaves France by the inviation of the Prussian King.
